This week, we began learning about motion-- more specifically, pushes and pulls. What better way to learn all about the two than by experimenting on the playground! The students enjoyed an afternoon outside sliding, swinging, and climbing to determine what force they were using to do each action. They were amazed to learn that they were using science during play time--who would've thought!
This week has been filled with lots of hard work and catching up! So instead, I will be sharing pictures from last weeks STEAM Fest (which was a blast by the way)! This week has been loads of fun with all of the Halloween activities! We decided to integrate that with our science lessons and watch matter change states before our eyes. We placed candy corn pumpkins into a variety of liquids (soda, water, vinegar, and oil) and made predictions about what would happen. The kiddos were so surprised to see that 3/4 of the pumpkins had dissolved the next day! Neat!!
It's been a crazy and short week, but we still found time to have fun and be creative! With Halloween right around the corner, all of First Grade decided to create pumpkin jars to be used as lanterns for decoration. We are only in the beginning stages of our creations, but we are sure they will turn out to be super spooky! The month of October means tons of spooky, Halloween writing prompts! Each week, we've been starting a new writing piece designed around topics like spiders and carving pumpkins. The students create idea maps, transfer them to rough draft organizers, and then write the final copy. It is a lot of hard work but they are doing such a fabulous job! I am so proud of all their effort and creativity!
Reading groups are now in action! It has been so great hearing each and every child read aloud and share their ideas about the stories. I even let them use "witches fingers" to help them follow along with the words-- Spooky! Between Falcon Frolics and Sweet Berry Farms, this week has been so much fun! Enjoy some pictures of all the kiddos having a blast in those bright, yellow class tees. Falcon Frolics Field DaySweet Berry Farms Field TripThis week in math rotations, we used mini erasers to help us create addition sentences. The students loved being able to organize their pile of erasers and come up with different additions problems on their own. Can you tell by the halloween erasers that we're excited for October?!
The past few weeks, we've spent a lot of time in Writer's Workshop learning about types of writing and what to write about. On Tuesday, we read a book about coming up with story ideas and then the students were able to write their own! We have worked on our stories throughout the week and are continuously adding details to both our writing and our pictures. We can't wait to share the final product! This week, we dove into science! After practicing our science safety, the students were able to be hands-on in an exploding experiment! (Nothing crazy, don't worry) With a little baking soda, vinegar, and food coloring, the kids were able to watch the still baking soda turn into a colorful fizz! Enjoy these pictures capturing their priceless reactions: |
